An El Paso County judge sentenced a man Wednesday to five years in prison for killing a pedestrian in what Colorado Springs police .

John Burton Marvel, 22, pleaded guilty in December to vehicular homicide in the wreck that killed 22-year-old Andrew Thomas Shada, court records show.

4th Judicial District Judge Gregory R. Werner also ordered Marvel serve five years of mandatory parole after his release, prosecutors said.

Authorities say Shada was standing outside his home when Marvel slammed into him on July 25.

According to court records, prosecutors dismissed charges against Marvel of driving under the influence, being involved in a speed contest and reckless driving.
