A Denver police officer has been suspended without pay after being arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
Davin Munk, 31, also faces a count of felony menacing in the case and is being held in lieu of $650,000 at the city’s downtown jail, officials say.
Munk has worked for the department since 2013 and was most recently assigned to a post in northeast Denver.
An investigation into Munk began after police were contacted by another Colorado law enforcement agency on Monday about an alleged sex assault that happened in Denver in late April.
“After receiving the information from the outside agency, Denver police contacted the alleged victim, who provided a statement regarding the incident,” police said.
An arrest warrant for Munk was issued after the alleged victim’s interview, and he was taken into custody. Police records show he was arrested at the department’s headquarters at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney, said Munk made his first appearance before a judge in the case Wednesday morning.
“No new court dates will be set now until after a decision on formal charges is made,” she said. “That may be early next week.”
Police say court documents in the case have been sealed to “protect the integrity of the investigation.” His mugshot also is being withheld.
Munk’s suspension is pending the outcome of the criminal case against him and a subsequent administrative review.
Munk has faced discipline several times over his career, including a four-day unpaid suspension in February 2015 for providing inaccurate information about an assault in a report, records show.
He was also issued a written reprimand for a January 2015 incident in which he carelessly handled city property and was counseled in April 2015 over his ability to obey department rules.
There is also a pending internal investigation into an allegation made against Munk of inappropriate force in Dec. 2015, according to his disciplinary file.
