Three Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and one sergeant have resigned following a two-month investigation into the mistreatment of a jail inmate, the law enforcement agency confirmed Saturday.

Ten other deputies were disciplined. No criminal charges are expected, said Mark Techmeyer, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

“We had an inmate in our facility named Logan McDaniel who was a challenging inmate to manage, to say the least. And he basically got to the deputies — under their skin, if you will,” Techmeyer said. “They mistreated him in our facility, which is completely against our values and what we stand for in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. It wasn’t physical abuse. The best way to describe was it was more like bullying.”

As , McDaniel, 60, aggravated deputies, who then retaliated. CBS4 said the investigation discovered deputies “intentionally sloshing buckets of dirty mop water into his cell, piping music into his cell that they knew would upset him, showing him pictures that would aggravate him and intentionally kicking his food on to the floor.”

CBS4 also said Sgt. Jim Shires and deputies Matthew Mount, Nilesh Gurne Mannina and Robert O’Hair stepped down.

Techmeyer declined to name who had been involved, but said that the deputies named by CBS4 were no longer with the Sheriff’s Office.

Seven other deputies received written reprimands while three other deputies faced corrective actions, Techmeyer said.

“Nothing rose to the level of criminal activity. It is over,” he said, adding no charges will be pursued.

The mistreatment began last fall and was brought to the office’s attention in February by another deputy, who was not involved, Techmeyer said.

The four officers were put on administrative leave as an investigation began. Shires left before it concluded. The other three left by last week, Techmeyer said.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office employs 545 sworn officers.
