A Greeley police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect late Wednesday night after the man tried to run over police officers and later , police say.
The name of the deceased suspect has not been released. No police officers were injured during the incident.
A woman called 911 around at 9:58 p.m. saying she was with two friends when a man ordered her at gunpoint to get $200 from an ATM at Chipper’s Classic Lanes bowling alley, said Sgt. John Baker of the Greeley Police Department.
The man, who had a sawed-off shotgun and a nickel-plated handgun, said he would shoot and kill the woman’s friends if she did not comply. The gunman took the money and the woman’s purse.
Police say they arrived at the bowling alley at 10:02 p.m. as the suspect was speeding out of the parking lot. The suspect pointed the shotgun at the officers but did not fire the weapon, Baker said.
Baker said the officers did not pursue the suspect at that time but immediately set up a perimeter to contain the suspect in that area of town.
Officers spotted the car near 6th Avenue and 14th Street at 11:28 p.m.
Police approached the car on foot and ordered the suspect out of the car, but he refused.
The man then put his car in reverse and tried to run over the officers, who leaped out of the way as the suspect crashed into a garage, Baker said.
The suspect sped away, leading a chase through town, north on U.S. 85. At Colorado 392, the suspect flipped around and drove south on U.S. 85, Baker said.
At U.S. 85 and 31st Street in Evans, the suspect crashed and disabled his car and jumped out of the car.
He walked across the median and that was stopped at the intersection, Baker said. The suspect forced a man and a woman out of the car and climbed inside.
Police officers confronted the suspect and were forced to shoot him, Baker said.
“It was not a good situation,” he said.
During the carjacking a small Pomeranian dog was lost and has not been found.
Animal Control officers are searching for the dog.
