Denver Fire assists police with baby chicks on I-25 in Denver,

Why did the chickens cross the road?

To jump into a sewer grate.

A gaggle of baby chicks caused a traffic delay on southbound Interstate 25 at Speer Boulevard about 10 a.m. Monday.

More than an hour later, the Denver Fire Department tweeted that the chicks had been rescued, although their mother wasn’t found. The department said the chicks were headed to the Greenwood Animal Rehabilitation Center.

Denver police received a report about the chicks shortly before 10 a.m., said fire department spokeswoman Melissa Taylor. “I’m not sure how they got there,” she said.

The six or seven chicks ducked into a sewer grate. “My guess is the freeway traffic probably scared them,” Taylor said.

At 10:05 a.m., one southbound lane was closed, and police and fire workers were on the scene.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife participated in the rescue, Taylor said.
