Eight sheriff investigators are looking into allegations that a woman who died May 27 at the Boulder County jail asked for help and was ignored.
According to an update from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Boulder sheriff learned of the allegations Tuesday after a man told county commissioners his friend was an inmate at the jail.
The woman who died has been identified as 29-year-old Stephanie Anderson. An autopsy report has not been released, pending toxicology test results.
that a woman who was arrested with Anderson said Anderson called for help and that the jail staff ignored her. Another man said his daughter, who was an inmate at the jail the day Anderson died, also heard Anderson’s cries and heard jail workers mocking Anderson.
According to Friday’s update on the investigation, the sheriff’s office said investigators have interviewed 58 people and expect to interview “approximately 20 more,” including witnesses, jail staffers and inmates.
There are no employees on administrative leave during the investigation.The sheriff’s office previously said Anderson was taken to a hospital May 26 after complaining of feeling ill. She was examined by doctors then discharged, returning to the jail shortly before midnight, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies found her body during a routine welfare check at 3:55 p.m. May 27. Medical responders tried to resuscitate her for about 30 minutes before she was pronounced dead.
Friends and family say Anderson had a heart condition that was worsened when she was under stress.
