An alert Colorado State Patrol trooper was able to rescue three missing, endangered children from Idaho when he spotted a van driven by the man and woman who were suspected of taking the children parked at a camping and fishing access point near a Vail Pass rest area on Interstate 70.

The trooper found the group camping nearby and Jason Frank Simon, 37, and Sarah Joy Dunn, 36, were taken into custody Saturday without incident.

Simon was wanted for sex abuse of a child on a $100,000 bail and Dunn was wanted for custodial interference and kidnapping on a $250,000 bail.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office in Idaho had issued an Amber Alert and notified Colorado authorities that the group was likely in the Frisco area, the Colorado State Patrol said in a news release. Members of the Frisco Police Department, Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the state patrol searched the area extensively.

The case is being investigated by federal, state and local agencies. Charges against Simon and Dunn are pending.
