Emergency workers recovered the body of a 30-year-old man who fell into Georgetown Lake early Sunday after the kayak he was paddling capsized on Saturday.

The Summit County Water rescue team recovered the body at 1:51 a.m., the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.

Deputies responded to a report of a capsized kayak in the lake at 7:11 p.m. Saturday. The caller said the kayaker was still in the water.

“Several bystanders and family members jumped into the lake in an effort to rescue the male but were unable to reach him,” the release said.

A Georgetown police officer arrived first and went into the lake with safety equipment, but was unable to reach the kayaker, who wasn’t wearing a life vest, according to the release.

Emergency responders worked into the night trying to find the man.

Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, Georgetown Police Department, Idaho Springs Police Department and other emergency workers assisted with the rescue efforts.

The sheriff’s office has not yet identified the kayaker.
