Police in Eagle say a 15-year-old driver who “acquired a vehicle” apparently mistook the gas pedal for the brake over the weekend and accelerated into a gas station convenience store, narrowly missing patrons.

The incident happened about 7:45 p.m. Saturday night at the Loaf ‘N Jug on Fairgrounds Drive, investigators say. It was captured by the shop’s surveillance cameras, which show the vehicle plowing through a glass entryway moments after a customer exits.

“The vehicle jumped the curve, drove upon the sidewalk and through the front door of the Loaf ‘N Jug, missing a patron by only a few feet,” police said in a news release. “There were no injuries reported as a result of the crash, or from the glass and debris flying into the store as a result of the impact.”

The collision’s extensive damage forced the normally 24-hour business to close for repairs.

Police say the crash remains under investigation and that charges against the boy behind the wheel of the vehicle are pending.

A police spokeswoman said Wednesday it wasn’t clear why or how the underage driver had the vehicle.
