A man surrendered to Edgewater police late Tuesday night after he allegedly fired gunshots after a domestic violence incident, authorities say.
Dane Anthony Hampel, 25, was arrested for investigation of possession of a gun by a previous offender, illegal discharge of a gun, third degree assault and reckless endangerment, Edgewater Chief John Mackey said.
Hampel allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in an upstairs apartment in a duplex on Marshall Street west of Sheridan Boulevard and 20th Avenue.
At 7:15 p.m., a neighbor called and said he was nearly struck by a bullet. Hampel allegedly fired about eight shots, including two that went through the apartment window, Mackey said.
Police arrived, learned about the earlier fight and tried determine whether the girlfriend was still in the apartment.
The suspect answered his phone but did not speak. Police could hear him breathing though, Mackey said.
Friends and family members then assisted police by coaxing Hampel to leave his apartment.
Hampel, who has a lengthy criminal record, surrendered to police at 10:15 p.m.
He was sentenced to four years probation in July 2011 on charges of theft of drugs and car theft. He pleaded guilty June 28 to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct with an offensive gesture. He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals on June 17.
