Shayla Wiggins went to the river near her home in Riverton, Wyo., with the hopes of finding a water Pokémon. Instead, she found a dead body.
Pokémon Go is a newly released, augmented-reality app where players — or trainers as they’re called — capture Pokémon while walking around.
The 19-year-old knew trainers were more likely to capture water Pokémon if they were near water, so she decided to head toward the Big Wind River Friday morning to try her luck.
“I was looking up the river and down the river to see where I wanted to go,” Wiggins said. “I noticed there was something in the water.”
On second glance, Wiggins realized it was a body and called 911.
“I started freaking out, and I was crying and shaking really bad,” Wiggins said.
The body was in 3 feet of water, according to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. The death appeared accidental, possibly a drowning, but the coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy. The sheriff’s office is leading an investigation with the help of the FBI and Riverton Police Department.
Wiggins downloaded Pokémon Go Thursday night. Although she was shaken by the event, Wiggins said finding the body didn’t ruin playing the game.
“That could have happened even if I was just going for a walk,” Wiggins said.
