Eighteen houses were evacuated in the 1200 block of Red Mountain Drive in Longmont on Thursday night as police searched a home for explosives.

Deputy Chief Jeff Satur said the bomb squad had recovered a pipe bomb inside the house and was still searching as of midnight.

Sgt. Sean Harper said the houses were evacuated around 7:30 p.m.

Satur said police had been investigating a series of commercial burglaries and identified a suspect they say carries a concealed weapon and has a pipe bomb and several other items of interest not related to explosives.

He said police took the man into custody on Thursday and obtained a search warrant for his home.
