A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to two years of probation and a year of jail work release that killed a Golden woman and left her young son seriously injured.

Andrew Huerena pleaded guilty May 24 to being an accessory to a crime, a Class 5 felony. Court records show the sentence was handed down Aug. 1.

Authorities say Huerena was driving eastbound on U.S. 6 in July 2015 with his wife, Alisha Huerena, in the passenger seat when the two began arguing. Alisha Huerena then grabbed the vehicle’s steering wheel, officials say, causing the vehicle to swerve into other lanes of traffic .

Henderson’s son was 10 at the time of the crash.

There was a protection order in place at the time of the crash that prohibited Andrew Huerena from having contact with his wife, investigators said.

Both Huerenas were indicted in the crash. In June, Alisha Huerena for causing the wreck after pleading guilty in April to reckless manslaughter and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.

The couple told Lakewood police that Alisha Huerena had reached over to tune the radio when the vehicle hit a bump, causing her to hit the steering wheel, according to investigators.
