Re: Aug. 7 news story.
A phobia is a type anxiety disorder. Homophobia and Islamophobia (as used in your admirable piece on Fort Logan National Cemetery today) are examples of misuse of the term. A more accurate, albeit lengthier, term is anti-LGBT bigotry or anti-Islam bigotry. Those who suffer from phobias generally know their fears are irrational and are eager for treatment and relief, while those who are active bigots are often proud of their narrow-mindedness and are loath to admit to their own irrationality. Let’s please not conflate a legitimate and treatable anxiety disorder with irrational intolerance; it does a significant disservice to those with anxiety disorders.
