A 20-year-old driver and his 19-year-old passenger died in a one-vehicle crash on the Western Slope during the weekend.
Erick Mondragon of Glenwood Springs lost control of his 1995 Toyota truck, and the vehicle skidded across the highway, rolling onto its side and colliding with a steel fence, according to the State Patrol.
Mondragon and his passenger, Amalia Cabrera-Torres of New Castle, died at the scene.
The crash happened at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday in Garfield County on eastbound U.S. 6 between Canyon Creek and New Castle, according to the State Patrol.
At the time of the crash, Cabrera-Torres was wearing a seat belt and Mondragon was not, according to the State Patrol.
Alcohol and excessive speed are being investigated as contributing factors. Highway 6 was closed for about four hours between Canyon Creek and New Castle as part of an investigation into the crash.
