
A teenager suspected in the, after she had given him a ride along with two friends when they were hitchhiking in Boulder County, was arrested Thursday night in Broomfield, the sheriff’s office reported.
, who turned 16 in June, is suspected of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault on an at-risk adult.
Collins was taken into custody at about 8:10 p.m. Thursday by sheriff’s detectives, who were assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Broomfield Police Department.
The sheriff’s office said the woman, 71, suffered “massive injuries, including a significant head injury, multiple fractures and multiple lacerations.” She was last said to be at a hospital in an intensive care unit.
Collins has been booked into the juvenile detention center. His bail is set at $1 million.
The attack happened Monday night in the victim’s Lefthand Canyon home. She was hit over the head with a fireplace poker. The suspect’s companions ran to a neighboring home about a half-mile away to report the assault.
