Denver prosecutors have formally charged a man with first-degree murder in a fatal September shooting in the city’s Five Points neighborhood.

David Young, 28, is accused of killing 38-year-old near the intersection of 29th and Welton streets. Investigators say Young approached Hammons  as Hammons left the Wardenclyffe after-hours club and shot him.

Hammons — also known as “Sleepy” — was taken by ambulance to Denver Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He died of several gunshot wounds to his torso.

Young was identified as a suspect and arrested on Nov. 11, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said on Monday.  He remains in custody at Denver’s downtown jail where he is being held without bail.

According to an arrest warrant for Young, authorities were able to identify him as a suspect thanks to a Metro Denver Crime Stoppers tip that came in to police on Nov. 7.

Young was also captured in the area of the shooting by surveillance cameras, the warrant says.

Hammons says he was a married father and grandfather who lived in Aurora and worked as a truck driver, delivery driver and bartender.

“He was a loving and devoted husband and father,” the death notice says.

Young’s next court date has not yet been set, the district attorney’s office says.
