One person is in critical condition following an apartment fire in southeast Denver early Saturday morning. Three others were taken to the hospital while 27 people were treated at the scene, according to the Denver Fire Department.

The second story balcony fire was first reported a little before 1 a.m. at 3450 S. Poplar St. Firefighters were at the apartment until 6 a.m., Denver fire dispatcher Capt. Robert Miller said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but a man , Aaron Kilbourne, said he was responsible. Kilbourne, who was visiting his mother, told the TV station that he was smoking cigarettes when he fell asleep.

Kilbourne and his mother attempted to put out the small fire but it grew out of control, he said.

The Red Cross said it is helping shelter people from seven of the apartment’s units.
