Authorities are searching for a motorist who fired shots last week at a southern Colorado deputy trying to check on his well-being.
The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office says the encounter happened Jan. 24 on Colorado 142 — near the town of Manassa — where the deputy was out patrolling. The officer stumbled across a light-colored Chevrolet Silverado that was parked in the highway without visible license plates.
“Because of the weather, the deputy was concerned about the motorist and approached the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “The driver of the vehicle started shooting at the deputy.”
The deputy shot back, officials say, before the pickup truck sped off eastbound on Colorado 142. The deputy was not hurt.
Other Conejos County sheriff’s deputies, along with the Colorado State Patrol, Manassa Police Department and Costilla County Sheriff’s Office, unsuccessfully searched for the suspect vehicle.
Authorities say the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting local officials in the case.
