Diane Marie Scholtes last saw her son, Christian McDonald, a few weeks before he was .
It was Christmas time, and Scholtes made the 38-year-old’s favorite seasonal treat, eggnog with whipped cream.
McDonald, who was homeless, died on Jan. 15 after he was struck by a black, 600 series BMW sedan at 16th and Blake streets at about 2:15 a.m. The driver sped away and left McDonald fatally injured and unconscious.
Police have circulated descriptions of the car to body shops. The car had damage to the driver’s side exterior mirror, the front left bumper, and headlight, Sonny Jackson, police spokesman, said on Monday.
So far, police have not found the car or driver. Jackson said anyone with information about the accident can call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867 or text to 274637.
McDonald would have turned 39 on Jan. 21. He was bipolar and had other mental issues, but was functional when he took his medication, Scholtes said.
“Christian was a good kid, and when he functioned, he functioned good. The last time he came here, he had a sleeping bag and a bible. He was sitting on the floor and mumbling, and talking to a lot of his imaginary friends around him.”
Scholtes, who is has congestive heart failure and is disabled, set up a GoFundMe page and collected enough to bury her son, she said.
“I couldn’t give him too much in this lifetime, but I gave him the best funeral. I took everything from GoFundMe for flowers, a headstone, and everything else,” she said. “We had a birthday party for him, and celebrated his life and cried for his death.”
Now, she just wants to see justice served.
“I hope I get stronger and stronger,” she said. “Because I want to see this guy arrested.”
