A 24-year-old man was sentenced last week to 10 years in prison for a fatal DUI crash in Lakewood.

Derek Roland Romero was sentenced Friday in Jefferson County District Court for the vehicular homicide death of 57-year-old Frank Disanto, according to the Jefferson County district attorney.

On Feb. 4, 2016, Disanto was making a left turn off of West Fifth Avenue to go north on Wadsworth Boulevard when his vehicle was hit by a vehicle driven by Romero.

Romero, who was convicted of DUI in the case, was driving recklessly and speeding — about 65 mph — in a 25 mph zone. He didn’t have a license or proof of insurance.

A Lakewood police officer, parked in a lot at Fifth and Wadsworth, witnessed the crash.

Disanto suffered severe injuries and died five days later after being taken off life support.

“This was a tragedy that could have been prevented,” District Attorney Pete Weir said in a news release. “Driving under the influence of alcohol is always a choice. Mr. Disanto was beloved by his family and friends and was an asset to our community.”

In November a Jefferson County of multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, driving under restraint and no proof of insurance.
