Firefighters on Tuesday battled to contain a nearly 30,000-acre wildfire in northern Colorado that has been fueled by warm, dry weather and strong winds.
The fire began Monday morning northeast of Sterling, near the Logan County town of Proctor, and pushed its way 23 miles across Interstate 76 into Phillips County. Volunteer firefighters and local farmers banded together to prevent the wind-whipped blaze from destroying Haxtun, a town of about 900 people.
The fire was listed as 80 percent contained on Tuesday afternoon.
