A 25-year-old man has been convicted of several charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving under the influence, in a February 2016 Arvada crash that killed a woman.

A Jefferson County jury also found Jose Sandoval-Cruz guilty of reckless driving, careless driving and driving without a license. The verdict was handed down on Monday, according to prosecutors.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office says on Feb. 14, 2016, 40-year- old Monica Zapata was driving westbound on 80th Avenue through the intersection at Sheridan Boulevard on a green light. Sandoval-Cruz was speeding southbound on Sheridan when he ran a red light at 80th and collided with Zapata’s car.

“There was testimony that he was traveling 55 mph in a 40 mph zone,” the district attorney’s office said in a news release. “Sandoval-Cruz and his two passengers got out of their car and fled on foot. They were arrested two hours later. Ms. Zapata died from her injuries.”

Zapata’s 15-year-old daughter, who was in her mother’s car, was injured.

Prosecutors say Sandoval-Cruz had a blood alcohol content level more than three times the legal limit of 0.08.

Sandoval-Cruz is set to be sentenced on April 21.
