A relatively small number of flights at Denver International Airport were canceled Friday morning due to a strong spring storm packing wind gusts around 50 mph, officials say.

As of 6:15 a.m., 44 flights or only 3 percent of the total have been canceled, said Heath Montgomery, DIA spokesman.

“The airport does have snow falling, but the good news is that it isn’t significantly affecting airport operations,” Montgomery said. “We haven’t seen a large amount of flight cancellations.”

He said snow crews have been out all night keeping the runways cleared.

Deicing protocols are in place so that will delay flights about 15 minutes, Montgomery said.

More flight cancellations are possible so people should check the flight schedule before coming to the airport, he said.

Because of spring break there are a lot of flights going in and out of DIA. About 175,000 passengers are expected during the day, Montgomery said.
