El Paso County GOP chairman accidentally backs into, seriously hurts his pedestrian friend

Trevor Dierdoff, chairman of the El Paso County Republican party, was driving a sport utility vehicle that struck and seriously hurt a pedestrian Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs, according to police.

Investigators say the man who was hit, a friend of Dierdoff’s, has life-threatening injuries and is in “unstable” condition.

The collision happened near the intersection of North Tejon Street and East Platte Avenue in the city’s downtown area.

No arrests have been made in the case and Colorado Springs police say they have not leveled any charges against Dierdoff.

According , 45-year-old Dierdoff was elected to lead the El Paso County GOP in February. Investigators told the newspaper that the SUV’s driver was backing up to get a parking space when it struck the pedestrian.

“The gentleman that was hit is a friend of Trevor’s,” said Daniel Cole, spokesman for the El Paso County GOP. “They were going to the same place. Trevor is at the hospital now sitting and praying with his friend.”

“It was an accident,” he added.

Lt. Howard Black, a Colorado Springs police spokesman, said an investigation into the case is ongoing.
