A fire broke out at a retirement community in Golden Thursday, and one person was taken to a hospital.

The fire at the Applewood Retirement Community, 2445 Youngfield St., broke out at about 5 p.m. in a unit of a three-story building. Firefighters used ladders to access balconies on the building.

The fire was under control by about 5:40, according to West Metro Fire Rescue.

It started in a second-floor unit’s kitchen, West Metro said. Two units were damaged heavily, and the fire displaced residents from three units.

The American Red Cross assisted two adults misplaced by the fire.
