A homeless woman who displayed what a prosecutor called “paranoia and delusional behavior” while representing herself in court was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for kicking a Colorado Springs police officer in the groin during a trespassing arrest.
Fourth Judicial District Judge Robert Lowrey, who ordered Katherine Stewart Felvey to prison, cited her long history of running afoul of the law, including at least 60 misdemeanor arrests across the country and up to two prior felonies, both for attacks on police.
Describing the case as “a failure of our mental health system,” Felvey’s advisory counsel, Damon Cassens, said her chances of receiving meaningful treatment in prison are “nonexistent.” Cassens was appointed to provide Felvey with legal advice after she fired two previous attorneys for failing to follow instructions, including her demand that they investigate claims that an officer she attacked was actually an impostor posing as a member of law enforcement.
Felvey, 54, was accused of delivering what officer Scott Warren described as several “donkey kicks” to his groin as he attempted to place her in custody after an obscenity-laced tirade at a Starbucks in Old Colorado City. Unable to post her $10,000 bond, she spent 575 days in the El Paso County jail awaiting her day in court.
