Drugs and alcohol are suspected as factors in a Garfield County crash Monday evening that killed a 54-year-old Grand Junction man.

Troy D. Friar was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed a 1993 Dodge Dakota pickup truck while traveling southbound on Colorado 13 near Rifle.

“The vehicle drove off the right side of the road and then back into the southbound lane where it lost control,” the Colorado State Patrol said in a crash bulletin. “The pickup traveled across the northbound lane and off the left side of the road before colliding with an embankment.”

Friar was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle.

The Garfield County Coroner’s Office says Friar’s death is being investigated as an accident. An autopsy is planned.

“The Colorado State Patrol and its vehicular crimes unit continue to investigate the crash,” the bulletin said. “Drugs and alcohol are suspected factors in this collision at present.”
