Donald Trump, right, stands with his son Donald Trump Jr. after the first presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., on Sept. 26, 2016.

Re: “” July 16 letters to the editor.

Letter-writer Barbara Herbst compares Donald Trump Jr. to the traitor Benedict Arnold. She likens Trump’s actions in meeting with a Russian lawyer to those of Arnold when he worked for the British to defeat George Washington’s revolutionary troops. This hysterical leap of logic overlooks the fact that we were at war with England.  Fortunately for all of us, we are not at war with Russia.

What Trump Jr. did was really dumb, but it was not treason. What if the lawyer had information that Hillary Clinton, as secretary of state, received more than $2 million from Russian oligarchs connected to Vladimir Putin and, in return, helped facilitate the Russians gaining control of 20 percent of our uranium? Would that not be legitimate fodder? An April 23, 2015, New York Times article was headlined The lawyer had no such information, but we already know that is exactly what happened.
