Re: Aug. 9 news story.
As a lifelong Broncos fan and enthusiastic admirer of John Elway, I was sorely disappointed in his tweet about a quarterback trade rumor. It’s one thing to refute the rumor, but it’s quite another to do so as if you are a Donald Trump clone calling any news story you disagree with “fake news.” Our president has done enough to discredit the journalism profession in our country without our football hero piling on.
I do not know the veracity of the story reporting about a Denver quarterback trade or the reliability of the radio show’s source, but let’s not launch a knee-jerk tweet about it accusing the radio show of making the story up. People like Mr. Elway and Mr. Trump need to stop muddying the waters about what is and is not fake news. A news tip from a reliable but anonymous source is not fake news. It’s journalism. It’s how writers do their jobs. Fake news is when you make something up out of thin air to purposefully damage a person or a cause.
