Re: “,” Sept. 5 letter to the editor.

I am a longtime supporter of both the University of Colorado and Colorado State University. I have attended numerous Rocky Mountain Showdowns. The behavior cited by Gabe Martinez in his letter presents only part of the ugly picture of what the Showdown has become. Drunken behavior and vulgar language are not behaviors of just one school’s students.

Perhaps Martinez can also ask for an apology for the two drunken CU students who verbally accosted by daughter and son-in-law for the egregious act of wearing CSU T-shirts. And maybe for the CU students who chanted “F--- CSU” to the CSU season ticket holders who were seated next to them.

I can’t wait for this mess to leave Denver.

Regarding the letter about CSU fans’ behavior, Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins was constructed while I was a graduate student from 1968 to ’72. Due to poor performance, attendance and revenues at the new stadium were pathetic, so purchase of season tickets was mandated. I attended a few games to try to capitalize on my investment, but every game was disrupted by similar bad behavior.

One snowy game was particularly unforgettable. As usual, the team was not performing well, so the very few “fans” bombarded CSU’s bench with snowballs, food containers and, yes, beer cans and bottles. In a foolish effort to deal with this, the coaches agreed to switch sides on the field at halftime. A number of CSU students moved to the opposite side to continue their attack on the CSU bench, but those who remained on the original CSU side were merciless to the visiting team.

Whatap new?
