Re: “” Sept. 11 letters to the editor.

I write in adding my name to those supporting Ingrid Encalada Latorre. My personal, direct experience with her informs this support. We are companeras/companeros participating in a great community.

My heart breaks when I hear the views of those uninformed by real-life encounters with real-life people. The foundation of my conviction is a series of personal experiences that have led to my personal awakening concerning immigration issues. Were Ingrid’s circumstances different (e.g., if she were a white person of privilege), it would not be necessary to take this action. The resources at her disposal would resolve the problem.

The root causes for this issue lay far upstream and need to be addressed upstream, not at the expense of this individual, her family, and community.

The Denver Post did the right thing in urging Gov. John Hickenlooper to grant a pardon to Ingrid Encalada LaTorre. We can all get so bogged down in analysis paralysis. The Denver Post cut through all that and went to the heart of the matter.

By granting this pardon, Gov. Hickenlooper will save a woman and her two little children from the senseless cruelty of wrenching them from their real home and deporting them to a place where they have no ties. This compassionate act of forgiveness will give the family a second chance without hurting anyone.

The governor is truly fortunate to possess the power to do so much good in such a simple way. I trust that he will open his heart and follow its wisdom.
