Shannon Renke was shot in her right foot while attending the concert with her husband Craig and their friends. Frederick resident Shannon Renke was annoyed when she heard someone light a string of firecrackers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival shortly after country music singer Jason Aldean took the stage during the last night of the three-day festival.

“I was a little upset,” said Renke, a former Berthoud resident. “Why would someone bring firecrackers to a concert? That’s just dumb.”

The noise stopped, then started up again a few moments later, but the second time around some of the people in the crowd of 22,000 screamed and others started running. Renke was alarmed, but still thought it was firecrackers.

A few more seconds passed before she described hearing “big machine gun-type huge artillery” and friends they had come to the concert with screamed, “Get down, get down, get down!”

“As soon as I squatted down, I was shot through the bottom of my foot,” she said. “I screamed to my husband, ‘I’ve been hit! I’ve been hit! I’ve been shot!'”

Shannon Renke was one of hundreds of people injured on Oct. 1 when Stephen Paddock knocked a window out of his suite at the Mandalay Bay hotel and sprayed bullets onto the crowd for several minutes before taking his own life. Paddock’s motive for the shooting rampage is unknown, and he killed 58 people, including two from Colorado.
