Front Range commuters will likely encounter slick and icy roads Tuesday morning, with up to four inches of overnight snow accumulation in some areas of northeastern Colorado.

Up to six inches of snow was expected overnight Monday in the mountains along the I-70 corridor, with 1 to 4 inches of snow in the forecast for the Front Range and Eastern Plains, according to the National Weather Service.

In Denver, rain is likely Monday night before 11 p.m., changing to snow after midnight. The overnight low in the city should drop to about 25 degrees and the chance for precipitation is 70 percent. Denver should see about 2 inches of snow overnight, the weather service said. Freezing rain will fall in some areas.

Denver Public Works on Monday afternoon said road crews were gearing up for the wintry weather.

“With an icy drizzle expected overnight into tomorrow, Denver Public Works will have snow plow crews available to keep watch on bridges and overpasses and put down de-icing material, as needed,” public works said in a news release. “Commuters are encouraged to give themselves extra time Tuesday morning to get to their destinations, as wet streets could be potentially icy in spots.”

On Tuesday in Denver skies should be cloudy and the high temperature should top out at about 32 degrees. Daytime snow showers are possible, but new accumulation in the city should be under an inch.

The wintry blast in Denver should be a short one, with sunny to mostly sunny skies in the city’s forecast from Wednesday into next week. High temperatures in Denver should rebound into a more seasonal range — mostly in the 50s. Overnight lows in Denver will be the upper 20s to lower 30s.
