A 33-year-old misdemeanor theft suspect was , the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

Two officers tried to arrest Christopher Louis Willard near South Nevada Avenue and East Navajo Street on suspicion of theft of $50 to $300, court records show.

Willard “actively resisted the officers and began fighting with them,” the sheriff’s office said. He took out a Umarex Colt Defender CO2-powered BB pistol, and he was shot.

Willard died at a local hospital.
