When Longmont resident Anne Kelly set out to walk her dog in early December, she didn’t know it would be her dog, Isaac’s, last walk.
Now she is in the process of trying to change her Homeowners Association bylaws to ban large dogs.
Kelly has been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and depression. Isaac, her 11-pound miniature poodle, served as her emotional support dog.
As Kelly and Isaac walked around the Golden Bear neighborhood southeast of 17th Avenue and Pace Street on Dec. 5, suddenly, a loose French mastiff dog ran up to them.
The mastiff “was so fast, all I had time to do was turn around and try to run but he bit into the rear end of my dog and started shaking him,” Kelly said. “I grabbed the leash and tried to pull him away but I couldn’t do anything. I was screaming for help but no one came. (The mastiff) grabbed my dog’s belly and tore that open.”
Kelly said Isaac bit her hand as she tried to separate the dogs. Eventually a neighbor came walking around the corner, distracting the mastiff, which dropped Isaac.
