The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning commuters to take their time as roads and highways remain slick due to freezing drizzle that’s causing street surfaces to freeze faster than they can be treated.

CDOT has closed Interstate 70 in both directions between Aurora and Bennett because of multiple crashes and weather conditions.

CDOT has also closed U.S. 85 at 136th Avenue south of Brighton in both directions because of the storm.

Aurora Police announced a full closure of I-225 northbound between Parker Road and I-70.

Slow down, warns, Kyle Fredin, meteorologist of the national weather service of Boulder.

“You’re going to have to slow down and expect that it’s going to take longer to get places today. Avoid travel if you can,” Fredin said.

An arctic front froze the ground before freezing rain and snow began falling.

“It doesn’t take long to get the roads really slick,” Fredin said.

Department officials recommend people take alternative routes.

CDOT says there is no estimated time for reopening the highways.
