Snow has caused slushy, wet and icy road conditions, leading the Colorado Department of Transportation to put traction and chain laws into effect Saturday morning.

The metro Denver area is expected to see 2 to 3 inches of snowfall throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service. The mountains should see 3 to 5 inches of snow with some areas getting up to 8 inches.

Moderate to heavy snow has caused road conditions to deteriorate in the metro area, CDOT said. Streets are becoming slushy with snow packed areas on top of existing icy conditions.

Chain and traction laws are in effect on Interstate 70 between Vail and Copper Mountain for both directions and between Silverthorne and Bakerville for eastbound lanes. They’re also in effect for Loveland and Hoosier passes.

Loveland Pass was temporarily closed in the late morning for vehicle recovery, according to CDOT. It reopened around 1 p.m.

Heavy traffic between Denver and the Eisenhower Tunnel, which caused delays in the morning, was starting to decrease by 8 a.m.
