The first marquee event of the PyeongChang Olympics comes Sunday night (Denver time) when Mikaela Shiffrin races giant slalom, her second-best event.

Shiffrin first made her name by mastering slalom, becoming a world champion in 2013 at age 17 and Olympic champion a year later. Of her 41 wins, 30 have been in slalom, six in GS.

She will be the overwhelming favorite in slalom Tuesday night, but she must be considered a solid medal contender in GS. She has two wins and four podium appearances in seven GS races this season, and she won a silver medal in the event at the world championships a year ago.She is third in the World Cup giant slalom standings this season.

Others to watch:

Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany, reigning world champion; Tessa Worley of France, 2017 World Cup GS champion.

Time: First run 6:15 p.m., second run 9:45 p.m.
