A chain reaction crash on Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs involving at least 12 vehicles sent two people to the hospital and snarled traffic for hours late Friday night.

A vehicle headed south on I-25 lost control on the bridge over S. Nevada Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Another car also lost control, hitting the first vehicle. The driver of the first vehicle got out and was then struck by a third vehicle, which had also lost control, according to Colorado Springs police.

The road chaos continued as a chain reaction of crashes involving at least nine other vehicles piled up, causing the southbound interstate to be closed for almost four hours while crews cleaned up the area.

The driver of the first vehicle who was struck was taken to a local hospital along with the driver of the third vehicle. Both people suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police said speeding mixed with icy road conditions was believed to be a factor in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation, and no one involved has been charged.
