Emergency responders with South Metro Fire Rescue aided in the birth of a baby boy on Tuesday morning.

At about 9:05 a.m., an expecting mother, Adrianna Alvarez, and soon-to-be father, Saul Flores, stopped their vehicle in a parking lot at 20209 E. Smoky Hill Road and called 911, according to a news release.

A 911 lead dispatcher, Angie Schell, took information from the couple and kept them on the phone, asking questions and giving instructions, as firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene.

When Medic 63 and Engine 62 arrived, the birthing was under way and the baby’s head was visible. The official delivery happened at 9:10:59 and the baby cried at 9:11:02, the fire department said.

“In a profession filled with tragedy, answering a 911 call and delivering a child … most certainly put smiles on everyone’s faces in the communications center,” said Schell, a 911 staffer for 17 years. It was her first on-the-job assist during a childbirth.

Baby Jaden Flores, who weighed 7 lbs., 7 oz. at birth, was taken with his mom to Parker Adventist Hospital where they are doing well.
