A burglary suspect who was armed, according to police, and was fatally shot by a Colorado Springs police officer has been identified.

Jese Paul Schlegel, 41, was shot early Wednesday as he was brandishing a pistol, police said in a Friday afternoon news release.

Officers were dispatched about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday to the 1000 block of West 19th Street on a burglary in progress, police said. When the first officer arrived, a man emerged from a building and fled on foot.

The officer chased the man, identified Friday as Schlegel, and the “suspect drew a pistol, brandishing it toward a citizen who was also on scene,” police said. “The officer fired at the suspect, striking him more than once.”

Schlegel was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The coroner’s office identified Schlegel on Friday.

An investigation, with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office as the lead agency, is ongoing.
