Hughes Stadium, love it or hate it, had one of the most unique tailgating experiences in all of college football. Pickups and RVs spanned dirt and gravel lots as far as you could see. It was a little grungy, but inclusive, and was as much a reason to spend a Saturday on the western outskirts of Fort Collins as the game itself.

Tailgating at the new Canvas Stadium? Hello, elitism.

A single season ticket on the fourth row at the 50-yard line at Colorado State this fall will run you $565. Thatap $565 for an up-close view of the Rams hosting Hawaii, Arkansas, Illinois State, Wyoming, Utah State and New Mexico, plus a ticket for the Rocky Mountain Showdown in Denver thrown in as a bonus.

Seven games for a price that breaks down to about $80 per opponent — not a bad deal.

Want to partake in one of CSU’s new tailgating packages? Thatap going to cost you.

CSU recently announced a partnership with Tailgate Guys, a company that specializes in made-to-order on-campus game day setups. Packages went on sale to the public Monday, and they are anything but affordable.

The cheapest of the bundles (Varsity) costs $1,300 and includes a 10×10 tent, five chairs, a table and a personalized sign at a “premium location” that could be next to the stadium or three blocks away. Thatap the only package cheaper than $3,500 for the season, and biggest difference between it and the option that costs $10,660 (Club package plus the media add-on) is that the pricier of the two has a bigger tent (20×20), more tables, paper plates and a TV. For $9,360 more. And that doesn’t even include food.

Full Season Packages
Varsity Varsity+ All American Club
$1,300 $4,370* $3,500 $7,690*
* Media packages are not included in discount.
Individual Game Packages
Opponent Varsity Varsity+ All American Club
Hawaii $325 $845 $895 $1,680
Arkansas $400 $915 $965 $1,850
Illinois State $250 $750 $800 $1,575
New Mexico $350 $885 $915 $1,725
Wyoming $350 $885 $915 $1,725
Utah State $325 $845 $895 $1,680

Obviously, there is an audience for this — there has to be, Tailgate Guys work with six NFL teams and a handful of major colleges. The biggest appeal of the shtick is that everything is set up for you when you arrive so you don’t have to worry about lugging your tent and chairs to campus every week. But isn’t what makes tailgating great the community it develops? The friends you make with the family parked next to you? The early morning wake-up call from your buddy to go set up your space with your admittedly ridiculous decorations and fire up that ridiculous grill recipe that mixes even more ridiculous ingredients that should never be blended but somehow come out perfectly?

Or is it to pay someone a year’s worth of CSU tuition to lounge in your cookie-cutter outdoor castle?
