It’s apparent that a lot of Coloradans – an estimated 200,000 of them – had the same idea this year when planning their Independence Day vacations: Take a flight out of Denver International Airport on Friday.

Their likemindedness means that DIA will have one of the busiest days ever, with longer waits at ticket counters and security checkpoints.

“I think a lot of people are getting out early so they can take the entire next week off for the Independence Day holiday,” said Emily Williams, DIA spokeswoman.

Passengers should get to the airport at least two hours early. The Transportation Security Administration warned that lines could get very long Friday, she said.

The high travel passenger numbers reflect how much DIA continues to grow, Williams said.

Luckily passengers won’t have to endure the same holiday travel snarl at DIA next week, she said.

The return home after July 4 will be spread out over several days, Williams said.
