Trumponomics is working

Re: “The economy’s great. That doesn’t mean Trumponomics is.” July 30 commentary

I so enjoy reading opinion columns. Near record-low unemployment, record-low unemployment for black and hispanic groups, 4.1 percent GDP last quarter, etc. Yes, salaries are lagging, but give it some time, Trumponomics is working.

As to tariffs, Trump is demonstrating the same winning strategy. The U.S. has been robbed in trade since the end of World War II.

Now Trump threatens to attack our $566 billion annual shortfall and everyone shouts the sky is falling. Trump will bring the vast majority of nations with one-sided trade deals to the bargaining table and gain concessions, just like the European Union. Trump has shown this business savvy for 18 months, most people and reporters still don’t see it for the winning strategy that it is.

My vote didn’t count

A letter came today from the Denver Elections Division notifying me my ballot was disqualified. It said Colorado law clearly states “if an elector casts and returns to the clerk the ballot of more than one major political party, all such ballots returned will be rejected and will not be counted.” Mine was for all one party’s candidates except one who happened to be of the other party. The letter encouraged me to reach out to our legislators “to start a conversation on this law.”

The law, while well-meaning, is flawed. As an independent, I am not a disguised Democrat, nor am I a RINO. I am an independent. As such, I think I reflect the views of most independents when I look at where a candidate stands, not just what badge or brand he or she wears. This law should reflect that. As currently written, it doesn’t.

Leave Red Rocks alone

Re: “Save Red Rocks from the plague of development,” July 22 commentary

Thank you Steve Good and Friends of Red Rocks for exposing another short-sighted scheme that, whatever the initial intentions, would damage the beauty, mystery, and experience of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. For 30 years, columnists and Denver residents have published impassioned and thoughtful pleas to respect Red Rocks and do it no damage. Some change is good, most is not. Why can’t the city see the difference? Thankfully we still have The Denver Post encouraging letters and columns.

He should have been behind bars

Re: “Accused kidnapper admits attacking woman walking dog,” July 28 news story

The question begs to be asked of our court system:

Why is any person with a record of sexual violence like 48 year old Johnny DeWayne Harris Jr., still out on the streets?
