Rod Smith takes issue with those who want the NFL to eliminate preseason games.

“Listen, if it wasn’t for preseason games, I wouldn’t have ever made the NFL,” he said.

Smith, a Broncos’ Ring-of-Fame wide receiver (1995-2007) with 849 career receptions for 11,389 yards and 68 touchdowns, began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri Southern State. On Wednesday, Smith joined 30-plus notable Broncos’ alumni at UCHealth Training Center to watch the next generation of wannabe Smith’s compete to make the roster with Denver’s preseason opener against the Vikings on the horizon.

“I know the first group is not going to probably play a whole lot,” Smith said. “I want to see the second group compete like they’re the first group.”

More specifically, Smith will keep his eye on one position.

“I’m looking forward to (watching) the offensive line,” Smith said. “They were a patchwork group for a couple years there and I think they’ve got a solid nucleus now. I expect us to establish the run game a lot better than we did. I know C.J. (Anderson) had 1,000 yards last year, but it was few and far between because of the way things were going.

“I think those guys have something to prove up front.”
