The University of Colorado’s Board of Regents on Wednesday selected two from their ranks to lead the search for President Bruce Benson’s replacement when he retires next July.

In a special board meeting in Denver, and after a nearly three-hour executive session, the regents unanimously selected Heidi Ganahl, a Republican holding an at-large seat, and Irene Griego, a Lakewood Democrat, to serve as co-chairs of the committee. The committee also will include members who are deans of schools, colleges or libraries; faculty and staff members; students; alumni; and community members.

The regents said they elected co-chairs, rather than a chair and vice chair as in past presidential searches, to communicate bipartisan cooperation.

“We did that intentionally to de-politicize the process, to say to the public that we are going to have our partisan differences on certain policy matters — however, on the presidential search, the Republicans and the Democrats are going to work very cooperatively, together, to pick the best person that we can find to lead this great university,” Regent Linda Shoemaker, D-Boulder, said during the meeting.

The regents also voted to open nominations for committee membership on Monday. The period in which people can nominate themselves or others will remain open until Oct. 8, and the full committee will be appointed Oct. 24.
