Lower section of Mount Evans Highway to shut down Monday

The Mount Evans Highway will close to motor vehicle traffic for the 2018 season on Monday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The top five-mile section of Colorado 5, to the summit area parking lot of the 14,271 peak, closed on September 4 at Summit Lake.The lower section of the highway will close at Echo Lake, elevation 10,600 feet, on Monday.

Part of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, the highway is the highest paved road in North America.

Colorado 5 is scheduled to reopen next year on Friday May 24, leading into Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting.
