Rolling into “Rocktober”

I’ve long made the joke that five major component must be mastered in baseball to succeed: First is pitching, then hitting, then pitching, then fielding, and then (of course) pitching.

While this might be a bit of an exaggeration, itap not much of one.

It was clear in last nightap Colorado Rockies win over the Chicago Cubs when, as the visiting team, the Rockies’ many pitchers out-dueled and out-lasted the Cubs’ many pitchers in an epic 13 innings National League Wild Card game.

The biggest difference between this year’s Rockies team and past years’ teams that have made it into the post-season is a pitching staff that has both quality and depth.

Maybe this year the Rockies will make it to the World Series where they win at least one game, and with this pitching staff, maybe a lot more.

On Tuesday evening I decided to say a prayer to my favorite saint, St. Anthony, to help the Rockies find a way to beat the Cubs.
Little did I know he would pick his namesake to be the hero.Tony Wolters.

Who would have thunk that!?

Thank goodness the Rockies won their Wildcard playoff against the Cubbies, in spite of terrible officiating by the umpires!
Do the umpires not brush up on rules of the game? Do they not understand the rules regarding play interference by base runners? Or are they just not paying attention to their duties?

Isn’t it time to replace the home plate umpire with a machine that will consistently call balls and strikes?

What are pitchers and hitters to do when the same pitch is called a strike at one time and a ball the next?

Something needs to be done to address umpires’ egregious mistakes!

Itap ruining the game, aside from enraging players and fans, alike. Why is baseball always so slow to modernize? It seems they only reluctantly addressed steroid use among players. Please for the love of the game, MLB do something!

State of politics in America brings me to tears

Re: “Sen. Jeff Flake and the sorry state of compromise,” Oct. 1 column

The op-ed by Amber Phillips in the October 1 ap section of The Denver Post may be the saddest commentary I have seen on the state of politics in the United States.

It breaks my heart to read “Itap this whole tribal nature of politics that becomes shirts and skins,” Jeff Flake said. “Itap us versus them. There’s no room for compromise or doubt.”

I always believed that compromise was what Democracy was based on. To find I am wrong after all these years (71), brings me to tears.
