A 50-year-old police officer has been formally charged with second-degree assault after he allegedly struck a man with a metal police baton, breaking his nose and leg and causing other injuries.

Joseph Rodarte was charged Wednesday in an on-duty incident Aug. 22 in which he allegedly repeatedly struck a man who was yelling obscenities while the officer was pursuing him, according to a news release from Ken Lane, spokesman for Denver District Attorney Beth McCann.

Rodarte is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court for an advisement hearing on Oct. 29, Lane said.
